During the years 1981-1984 and 1988-1992 he was a member of the Knesset [The Israeli Parliament] from the Labor party. He was Chairman of the Culture, Education and Sports Committee, and a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. He also served as Israel's representative at the Council of Europe and as President of the France-Israel Friendship League.
